Synchronicity Strings is one of today's most sought after music ensembles in Northern California. Since 2005 they have been delighting audiences with their energetic, stylish performances at corporate and social events in San Francisco, Napa, Sonoma, Livermore, San Jose and beyond. Synchronicity Strings is the #1 music pick for many of San Francisco's top event planners: Morgan Doan, Laurel Anderson, Duncan Reyes, Stacy McCain, Mandy Scott, Holliday Weddings, Dee Merz etc.
The collective ensemble brings together the Bay Area's finest string players managed and led by the cellist Rachel Turner Houk. Members of the ensemble regularly perform with SF Opera, SF Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony and New Century Chamber Orchestra. Synchronicity Strings players are all highly experienced, professional musicians and accomplished chamber musicians.
RACHEL TURNER HOUK
Born to organize! (or my two younger brothers might say "be bossy"...) I am a British born Oakland implant who studied cello in London (Trinity College of Music) and New Jersey (Rutgers University), lived in Germany and New York City, and now enjoys the glorious sunshine of Northern California.
I founded Synchronicity Strings in 2005 and have since successfully coordinated string music for over 500 special events.
I will work with you to provide TOP-NOTCH music for your special event. Every event is unique and different. I enjoy working with you to find the best combination of ensemble and repertoire to perfectly match your event's uniqueness. I will guide you through the entire process: selecting the best ensemble to match your budget and venue size, choosing the music selections, advising on special requests and day of event set up and cues.
I've been told my ability to stay calm in all situations makes me the dream music coordinator. Over the years I've definitely faced some interesting situations (TLC's "Four Weddings" cameras in our faces; wind attempting to blow over the canopy; bride no-show to name but a few). My extensive experience helps me handle every event with grace and calm. I believe it's my job to provide a superior musical performance - no matter what.
POP STRING QUARTET
We LOVE playing rock and pop music!
For the past 10+ years I have been exploring the many ways to play rock, pop and jazz on strings. This has led to performances with the living music legends Green Day, Barbara Streisand, Smokey Robinson, Nena, Robin Gibbs (The Bee Gee's), Machine Head, Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull), Tommy Lee, Josh Groban, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and plenty of collaborations with local singer songwriters.
This love of popular music has prompted me to write 100's of pop/rock arrangments for string quartet. These enthralling string versions capture the rhythmic drive of the original tunes while assimilating the unique qualities of strings.
When you know you want the sound of strings but the songs of your favorite bands, SYNCHRONICITY Strings is your group!
Book the best ensemble to match your budget, venue and event size:
STRING QUARTET - 2 violins, viola, cello
STRING TRIO - 2 violins, cello (or violin, viola & cello
STRING DUO - violin & cello
STRING ORCHESTRA - we can expand the quartet up to 24 string players.
We can add Flute, Harp, Piano or Trumpet
Rachel is a Bay Area classically trained versatile violinist whose abilities range from Mozart to modern day pop and rock to free style improvisation. Born in Portland, Maine into a family of musicians, Rachel had her first violin lesson at the age of 3. She and her brothers studied with members of the Boston Symphony until high school, when Rachel jumped coasts and went to San Francisco to attend the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Prep as a student of Zaven Melikian. She received her B.M. at the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Donald Weilerstein and a M.M. from the University of Maryland. Rachel loves the variety of her freelance lifestyle which includes classical as well as electric groups.
The Synchronicity Strings family has been a joy for Rachel for the past 4 years with performances at many cool events as well as weddings with her exceptional colleagues. She lives in Oakland and enjoys aerial acrobatics in her free time.
My name is Ivo Bokulic, and I play the viola. I was born in Croatia, raised in the suburbs of Chicago, and now live in San Francisco. I hold Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and am associate principal viola of the San José Chamber Orchestra. I am also an active freelance musician in the Bay Area and beyond, performing with groups such as Utah Festival Opera, Reno Philharmonic, Berkeley Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony, Opera San José, Fresno Philharmonic, Santa Cruz Symphony, Merced Symphony, Opera Parallèle, and One Found Sound. As a member of San Francisco’s Magik*Magik Orchestra, I have toured, recorded, and performed with acts such as Death Cab for Cutie, Sting, Chicago, and Third Eye Blind.
I feel extremely fortunate and humbled to be a part of the Synchronicity Strings family. The players are incredibly talented, seasoned, and professional. I always look forward to playing wth Synchronicity Strings: the opportunity to play great pop music arrangements with such fabulous musicians is an immense pleasure.

I am an East Coast transplant to the Bay Area since 1997 and I continue to adore living here. I love the culture, proximity to the ocean and my beloved Mt Tam, where I never get enough of the grandeur and sacred beauty of the redwoods. I have been playing violin for over three decades and currently enjoy performing regularly with my Grammy-nominated chamber orchestra, the New Century Chamber Orchestra, as well as the River Oaks Orchestra in Houston, on movie and video game soundtracks with the Skywalker Ranch Orchestra, in the pit of Broadway shows in SF and the SF Opera. Whew!
I truly love being a part of Synchronicity Strings for the high level of music-making and my wonderful colleagues. We have such a good time making really good music together, whether it's Beethoven or Beyoncé. Highlights include the many expressions of appreciation from guests, including delighted surprise upon hearing a string quartet playing Led Zeppelin and Lady Gaga, and being a part of and contributing to some of the most special events in people's lives. A true honor and privilege.
I am a very rare San Francisco native! I have played violin since I was three and added viola to the mix my senior year of college. I studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and have since subbed with various orchestras and played hundreds of weddings and parties.
had the privilege of playing in a pop/ rock quartet, Quartet Rouge, with Synchronicity owner, Rachel. (Check out our album "Muses" on itunes, amazon etc) That was my first taste of playing pop music arranged for strings. I loved it! It became the style I enjoy the most to play.
I love the room for creativity and I love when guests at different events try to guess which song we are playing.
Synchronicity strings has allowed me to do what I love, making people happy through music. We are dedicated to entertaining our guests and introducing them to the wonderful world of pop string music!
